Unlike tournaments free poker games of the ring type don't have raising of the blinds. So you can play totally different. That being said its best not to go all in pre flop, but do so every so often if you have a strong hand.
Here are my best tips for free poker games ring games…
With strong hands any pockets from 10 and higher and any combination of face cards, raise 4x the big blind.
With medium strength hands raise 2x the big blind. Depending on the pre flop raise (if one), the strength of my hand, and also what I think of the strength of the other players and other callers, I may call.
With weak hands, unless I'm in the blinds I find its best to fold. By weak hands I mean any card 9 or lower, not pockets and not paired with a face card.
Some people will play small suited cards that are within 1 card of each other hoping for straight or flush, and in rare occasions, straight flush. I personally don't like playing these.
If I hit the flop with 1 pair I'll put a feeler bet out there of 2x the big blind if I get re-raised I'll call and then check the turn and maybe a pot sized bet on river with the hope of stealing the pot.
If I miss the flop, I just check and hope to get a free card, if I do, depending on if I feel I can steel the pot, I might bet big on the turn. If I get called and still have nothing I'll check the river and cut my losses.
Now if I hit 2 pair or trips on the flop, I would bet big so that if anyone is chasing they have to pay to get there. If I get called, and the board pairs, I just check and re-raise. If I get raised and all in on the river.
If I'm the one drawing, I might raise 2x just to see if I can win the pot. If I get called, I just check it down to the river and a 4x big blind bet only if the other players check it down. If I hit my straight or flush I bet 3x the big blind hoping they have high pair or trips and don't notice or care about straight or flush because I know I have done it. Some people just have to see that the other person was chasing and caught.
Knowing who you are playing, and how they play Ring Games is a big help. People play Ring Games, tournaments and heads up play differently, I know I do.
